NOAM (acronym for No'ar Masorti, Masorti Youth),
a unique youth movement in Israeli society, unites youngsters from the Masorti
congregations and TALI schools with children from Orthodox, Reform and secular
homes. At NOAM's 16 branches, some 2,500 young Israelis meet, interact and learn
first-hand the meaning of pluralism and tolerance in the deepest sense.
The
NOAM ten- to eighteen-year-olds participate in weekly activities, Shabbatonim
(weekend events), seminars and Tikun Olam (social action) projects. Educational
programming focuses on subjects such as Jewish identity, Zionism, Jewish education
and more. All activities emphasize the importance of Jewish traditions fused with
the pluralistic and inclusive atmosphere of Masorti Judaism. Every young person
is made to feel welcome and acquires a sense of belonging. Activities take place
on both local and national levels, for all the different age groups.
NOAM provides its members with unforgettable experiences and teaches them leadership
skills and Jewish values, contributing to the long-term advancement of Israeli
society. The pluralistic Jewish environment offered by NOAM activities helps to
strengthen both the youngsters' Jewish, Zionist identity and their ability to
understand and respect Masorti and other approaches to being Jewish and living
in Israel.
Each
year, a group of NOAM members volunteer for community service, after graduating
from high school, during which they work as coordinators in the NOAM branches,
going on to fulfill their national duty in the IDF. NOAM also supports IDF Nahal
(Pioneer Fighting Youth) units, in which members combine army service with community
work. NOAM graduates are well integrated into all programs of the Masorti Movement
and are often instrumental in its further development.
NOAM is run by a dedicated staff of professionals and volunteers, led at its head
offices in Jerusalem by director Ze'ev Kainan and NOAM rabbi (a post introduced
in 2003) Deby Grinberg. Eleventh- and twelfth-grade NOAM members serve as youth
counselors for the younger age groups, with Garin members and NOAM graduates leading
the older groups.
