Bar/Bat Mitzvah for
the Special Child | Operation Mazal Tov |
NETAIM | Maayan
As a natural continuation of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah for the Special Child program,
in which children with special needs study Jewish values and observance, the Masorti
Movement offers a rich informal educational opportunity at the Ramah-NOAM Summer
Camp. As with all other groups, the camp experience for these children reinforces
their understanding of Jewish tradition and their sense of connection with Jewish
peers and with the Jewish community. The combining of the two camps creates a
wonderful opportunity for Tikun Olam (social action), for all involved.
First held during the summer of 1999, Camp Netaim has been extraordinarily successful,
and has become a permanent feature of the Ramah-NOAM Summer Camp, which attracts
almost 500 children. Growing from a one-week program, Netaim campers now experience
two full weeks of fun and educational activities, often participating in programs
of Ramah-NOAM.

Each age group at the Ramah-NOAM camp has a Netaim committee that is responsible
for preparing programming with Netaim campers. Ramah-NOAM and Netaim campers spend
time together, with a very popular activity being the joint swimming session.
Goals and Objectives
a. To provide a continuing Jewish education framework for children with special
needs.
b. To include in a Jewish camping experience those with special needs, who are
often excluded or neglected.
c. To teach able-bodied Ramah-NOAM campers the value of outreach to those with
special needs.
d. To provide parents of children with special needs a much-needed framework for
the care for their children during the month of August.
e. To include children with special needs in NOAM activities during the year,
building on their positive camp experience.
f. To provide a platform for Tikun Olam (social action) activities within the
framework of the NOAM youth movement.
