The Masorti Movement’s Conversion Institute has been conducting conversion classes since 1991, and hundreds of people have studied and been Halachically converted to Judaism after completing its courses, held throughout the country. Since the Supreme Court handed down its February 2002 ruling in favor of Masorti conversion to Judaism, there has been a significant increase in the number of requests for information about the Masorti conversion process.
The conversion student body comprises a very diverse group of individuals, including infants and children adopted abroad by Israeli citizens; olim (new immigrants) who, while eligible for aliyah (immigration), are not Jewish but either have Jewish roots or are married to a Jew; and foreigners who come here to work and fall in love with Israel and Judaism.
The study program generally lasts about one year, during which the conversion candidate, along with other family members, is expected to participate in the religious life of one of our congregations. In addition to formal studies once or twice a week and regular counseling from the local rabbi, each candidate is expected to read extensively and begin to take on basic Jewish practices, such as Shabbat and Kashrut. When the accompanying rabbi considers the candidate ready, the conversion process is completed by an interview before our Bet Din Legiur (Religious Conversion Court) in Jerusalem. Those who are accepted by the Bet Din are circumcised (males) and ritually immersed in a Mikveh, as required by Jewish Law.
